Day 23: Favorite Winchester Family Member (Not Sam or Dean)

Though I like Mary, I wouldn't say she'd be favorite.  I think I'll have to go with John Winchester.  He really wasn't there for the boys as they grew up.  In the end he gave up his own life so that Dean could live.

Yes! John is a fascinating and complex character who can't easily be put in a box. I don't see myself ever forgiving him for the events of Something Wicked, but I still count him on my list of loved characters. I hate it when fans try to portray him as a two-dimensional asshole.

For myself, I can't say John, as his neglect of the boys is of such level that he should've had his parental rights taken away. And how he treated Dean is completely unforgiveable and messed Dean up to the point of not knowing who he is or what he wants. It's irriversable damage for Dean.

I can't say Mary, because of Season 12, and also for the seasons she wasn't there, because she wasn't there. Not that she could help that, but she can help it now, in Season 12. She should be there with the boys, and she isn't. I really dislike it. I can't charge her with neglect, but definitely with poor decision making and having her priorities totally effed up.

For non-blood relatives that are recognised to be familially tied to the boys, Bobby, Benny and Castiel stand out to me.

Bobby was a surrogate father for them, which in my book counts, big time. So he'd be number one on my list.

Benny was rased to brother status by Dean, but to Dean only, so I suppose it's a little lobsided in his case. Still, Bobby said clearly you don't have to like family, so Sam's jealousy and dislike of Benny doesn't make him any less of a brother to Dean.

And then there's Cas. From season 6 onward Dean has called him family. From season 11 onward, Dean has called him brother. Sam has always been inclusive with Cas and he also loves Cas as a brother.

My answer is a case of, "family don't end with blood". I hope it counts, or at least makes for a some food for thought. :-)

John wasn't a great father, but there's no denying he loved his sons and gave his life for Dean's.
